Linear spaces as subgroups of products of groups

We characterize those locally convex real spaces that can be embedded as subgroups of products of locally compact Abelian groups. As a corollary we exhibit examples of Abelian topological groups which cannot be embedded into products of locally compact Abelian groups, even though they satisfy Pontryagin-van Kampen duality and respect compactness.
