An introduction to Genuine Laminations of 3-manifolds
by
Will Kazez
University of Georgia
Coauthors: David Gabai (University of Georgia)

Essential laminations were introduced by Gabai and Oertel as a very useful generalization of Haken manifolds and manifolds containing taut foliations. Essential laminations which aren't slightly disguised foliations are called genuine. Many manifolds contain genuine laminations, and they turn out to have many very desirable properties.
