A counterexample to de Groot's conjecture in R3

In 1982 R. Pol answered in the negative de Groot's conjecture by constructing a subspace X of R4 with cmp X = 1 and def X = 2. A counterexample to another conjecture of de Groot was given by Kimura in 1987 who constructed a subspace X of R4 with Cmp X = 1 and def X >= 2. In this talk we will present a new approach to constructing counterexamples to de Groot's conjectures which allows us to construct a subspace X of R3 with cmp X = Cmp X = 1 and def X = 2.
