A categorical characterization of the Vietoris topology
by
Walter Tholen
York University, Toronto, Canada

With VX denoting the hyperspace of closed subsets of a topological space X, we show that the element relation on VX ×X is universal among certain relations on Y ×X (Y any space), yielding a purely categorical characterization of VX. This then provides the possibility of expressing higher separation axoims for X categorically, by imposing the categorical Hausdorff axiom on VX and VVX.
