Fast Evaluation of Radial Basis Functions: methods for generalised multiquadrics in Rn
by
Jon Cherrie
University of Canterbury

Radial basis functions (RBFs) are commonly used for interpolation to non-gridded data in two or more dimensions as they produce an invertible system with only weak conditions, or no conditions on the locations of the interpolation nodes. However, calculation and evaluation of RBFs for large data sets can be computationaly expensive. We describe a hierarchical method for fast evaluation of RBFs and develop the necessary expansions for the generalised multiquadric.
