The twist construction

The starting point for the construction is a polygonal decomposition of the boundary 2-sphere of a 3-ball (with each polygon having at least two edges) and a set of orientation-reversing face pairings of the polygons. As is well known, the quotient of the 3-ball under the face pairings is not generally a 3-manifold. However, if you subdivide each edge appropriately and then compose each face pairing with a twist, the quotient space is a closed 3-manifold. The talk will consist mainly of examples.
