The semigroup operation of a discrete semigroup S can be extended to \betaS. The semigroup \betaS is interesting because it is a maximal semigroup compactification of S and because it has applications to Ramsey Theory and to Topological Dynamics. I shall give a sriking application to Ramsey Theory, in showing that Hindman's Theorem follows easily from the existence of an idempotent in \betaS\S. I shall also discuss how interesting topologies can be defined on S by using idempotents in \betaS\S.
