On the computation of the first Hochschild cohomology group of an algebra

We develop combinatorial techniques to identify the first Hochschild cohomology group of an algebra which is a factor of a path algebra. Most results in this vein already existing in the literature are obtained as particular cases. When the underlying graph has no double arrows, the group has a description in terms of the fundamental group of an oriented graph with relations, as introduced by Gabriel. We apply the techniques to obtain explicit computation formulas in particular cases, which include that of monomial algebras.
