Hyperbolic automorphisms of free groups
by
Peter Brinkmann
University of Utah

An automorphism \phi:F --> F of a finitely generated free group F is said to be hyperbolic if there exist numbers M > 0 and \lambda > 1 such that
\lambda |g| <= max
{ |\phiM(g)|,  |\phi-M(g)| }
for all g in F, where |.| denotes some word metric on F.
We prove that an automorphism \phi:F --> F of a finitely generated free group F is hyperbolic if it has no nontrivial periodic conjugacy classes.
