On the forcing partial order in dimension two

There is a partial order on pseudo-Anosov mapping classes of the punctured disk that is the two dimensional analog of Sharkovskii's ordering on periods for periodic orbits of maps of the interval. In this talk we describe an approach to this partial order via train tracks and folding sequences. Results from computer experimenation in special cases are discussed.
