Destabilization of fluid-filled spinning containers
by
David G.H. Tan
Dept. of Maths. and Stats., U. of Otago
Coauthors: Brent D. Adcock

The talk addresses a long-standing problem in satellite design. A satellite spinning about its axis of least intertia can be destabilized by the motion of the fluid propellant in its fuel tanks. Key obstacles to progress have included a poor understanding of the principal physical processes responsible for satellite destabilization, mathematically unsound formulations of the physical problem, and the lack of robustness of numerical schemes. The talk includes a summary of existing theory and some new computational results.
