Elliptic curves in information security applications
by
Valtteri Niemi
Nokia Research Center, Helsinki

Elliptic curves serve a good mathematical basis for various cryptographic primitives. These can be used in industrial applications for information and telecommunication security. Especially in the area of mobile and wireless communication networks elliptic curve based solutions have clear advantages over other solutions.

Some cryptographic primitives which utilize elliptic curves and hyperelliptic curves are presented. The suitability of various curves for these cryptographic purposes is discussed. A brief introduction of relevant cryptographic aspects is also given. Furthermore, the use of elliptic curve crypto in typical applications is described together with some information about standardization issues.

Finally, we discuss further potential for number theory based industrial applications.
