The mathematics of suspensions
by
Jerome A. Goldstein
University of Memphis

The mathematics discussed here is motivated by some blood flow experiments in the laboratory of Eugene Eckstein of the University of Tennessee Medical School (in Memphis). An old random walk model of Mark Kac leads to telegraph type equations. These are hyperbolic equations, but the solutions have asymptotically parabolic features. Of concern are some variants of these equations involving fractional derivatives. This research is still in its early stages, so this talk will be a preliminary report.
