C*-algebras Associated with Branched Coverings

Given a branched covering, we define its C*-algebra using an r-discrete groupoid associated by Renault to a partial local homeomorphism. We prove that this C*-algebra is isomorphic to an augmented Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We consider several examples of C*-algebras arising from branched coverings, and indicate how to compute their K-theory.
