A theorem of Derek Holt says that a nilpotent group is automatic if and only if it is virtually abelian. Every nilpotent group is also a solvable group; is Holt's theorem still true if the word ``nilpotent'' is replaced by the word ``solvable''? This talk will be about joint work with John Groves, in which we proved that the answer to this question is yes for a special class of solvable groups, by studying their isoperimetric functions.
