This is the first of two talks describing joint work with Andy Miller on applications of tree valued Morse functions.
We introduce the notion of a tree valued Morse function on a simplicial complex, and describe some results which relate the connectivity properties of e-links (analogs of ascending and descending links) of the Morse function with the connectivity of point preimages. One application is a simple procedure to check that certain 2-dimensional CAT(0) groups are free-by-free.
