Several equations in one variable
by

Howie first used relative diagrams in 1981 to study equations over groups. A relative diagram is a tesselation of a surface which describes a map into a pair of 2-complexes. This talk will use the dual notion of relative picture as described by Bogley and Pride. The study of relative pictures, all of whose vertices almost look alike, will provide us with sufficient conditions for a system of equations in one variable to be solvable over a torsion free group. We will then explore a Freiheitssatz-like corollary of this result.
