Contractible locally C*-algebras
by

A locally C*-algebra is an inverse limit of C*-algebras. Such an algebra A, with unit, is called contractible if as an A-bimodule it is projective. It is known that the cartesian product of an arbitrary family of full matrix algebras is contractible. We prove (a conjecture of A.Ya. Helemskii) that the converse is also true; that is, a locally C*-algebra is contractible iff it is topologically isomorphic to a cartesian product of a family of full matrix algebras.
