Numerical experiments in the seismic inverse problem
for 1D media with 3D propagation: combined use of layer stripping, optimization
and automatic differentiation.

In seismic inverse problems for 1D media, it is well known that the layer
stripping method might suffer from numerical instabilities due to inaccurate evaluation of
sensitivities. These loss of accuracy introduces new local minima for the usual
least-square formulation and these minima might capture descent methods trajectories.
We shall present some numerical experiments on the combined use of layer stripping
and optimization for 1D media with 3D propagation in the acoustic case. We shallexamine the potentialities of automatic differentiation tools in such problems to improve
accuracy. We are therefore interested by the impact of AD in real life applications.
