On Pommersheim's n-term relation for the Dedekind sum
by
Jeffrey L. Meyer
Syracuse University

In his 1993 paper appearing in Math. Annalen, J.E. Pommersheim proved an n-term relation for the Dedekind sum. This result generalizes Dedekind's famous reciprocity theorem and a three-term relation discovered by H. Rademacher. In this note, we apply Dedekind's transformation formula to give an analytic proof of one of Pommersheim's results. We use the same method to deduce relations for a sum analogous to the Dedekind sum defined by S(d, c) = \sumj=1c-1 (-1)j+1+[dj/c].
