Euler products and abstract trace formulas

The existence of an analytic continuation for a given abstract Euler product is equivalent to certain versions of explicit formulas. We examine conditions under which a given functional calculus (attaching an operator A(f)  to every test function f) delivers a spectral proof for the analytic continuation and a spectral interpretation for the explicit formulas.
