A solution of the Bestvina-Edwards problem

Several years ago, M. Bestvina and R. D. Edwards proposed the following interesting problem: Does there exist a noncontractible cell-like compactum whose suspension is contractible? In our talk we shall present an affirmative solution of this problem.
