The characteristic submanifold of a Haken 3-manifold

In the 1970's, Jaco and Shalen, and Johannson, showed that any Haken 3-manifold with incompressible boundary has a canonical submanifold, called the characteristic submanifold. In this talk, I will describe a new proof of the existence and uniqueness of this submanifold.
