New ways of destroying autohomeomorphisms of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers

S. Shelah constructed a model of set theory in which there are no non-trivial autohomeomorphisms of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers by providing an obstruction to an autohomeomorphism and then sealing the fate of this autohomeomorphism by specializing the obstruction, thereby making it absolute. An alternate to this approach will be discussed and some applications provided.
