The problem of synchronizing chaotic systems has received much attention in the last decade. In this lecture I will give an overview of rigorous results that have recently been obtained in the area. The phenomenon of phase synchronization which already attracted the attention of Huygens will receive particular attention. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon of chaotic phase synchronization based on Kuramoto's work will be proposed. The analytic predictions of this theory were tested in an electric circuit exhibiting a Rössler like chaotic attractor and good agreement was found. This talk will be accessible to graduate students in the physical and mathematical sciences.
