On efficient solution of linear systems in implicit discretization of the shallow water equation

Numerical solution of partial differential equations via implicit discretization schemes often leads to linear system of equations. The linear system to be solved is usually large and sparse and the methods of choice are the iterative methods. For an efficient computer solution one needs suitable solvers fitted to special structure of the particular problem.
We study implicit discretization of the two-dimensional shallow water equation and numerical solution of the corresponding system of equations. Our goal is to design efficient preconditioner for the system and develop a new solution procedure.
Our interest is both theoretical and practical. We will report the progress in theoretical analysis as well as the results of extensive numerical testings with recommendation which method is the optimal choice.
