A Syntactic Approach to Covers of E-dense Semigroups

Let X be an infinite alphabet and S an E-dense semigroup. We define a natural concept of an evaluation in S of group terms w in (X \cup X-1)+. For a group variety H this leads to the notion of an H-verbal subsemigroup of S which is intimately connected with the least H-congruence on S. What is more, these conepts provide a short and easy access to, and some refinements and generalizations of certain covering results found by Fountain, Pin and Weil.
