A variety V is said to be residually finitely axiomatizable provided the class of all subdirectly irreducible algebras belonging to V is a finitely axiomatizable elementary class. We prove that every variety generated by a finite group is residually finitely axiomatizable. This result promises to open a new pathway to the classical theorem of Oates and Powell according to which every finite group is finitely based.
