Algebraic and combinatirial properties of formal languages

My lecture will be devoted to some formal languages connected with the property of repetition of symbols in strings. More presicely I concern the following three directions. 1) Syntactic semigroups of avoidable languages. 2) Problem of regularity for so-called equational languages. 3) Periods and exponents for languages arising from the well-known strings of Thue and Arshon. All the presented results were obtained during last years by the group of young mathematians (A. Klepinin, A.Shur, L. Volkov) under my supervision at Ural State University, Ekaterinburg.
