We prove that the topology induced by any (complete) fuzzy metric in the sense of George and Veeramani is (completely) metrizable and so we are able to generalize, among other classical results, the Niemytzki-Tychonoff theorem to fuzzy metric spaces. We also give versions of fixed point theorems for contractive (fuzzy) mappings in complete fuzzy metric spaces.
