Unitary dilation of several contractions

A characterization for a commutative family of operators to have a unitary power dilation is presented. The problem is converted into one on extension of positive definite operator valued functions defined on a subset of a *-semigroup. As a byproduct, a solution to Krein's extension problem for positive definite functions on symmetric subsets of RN is proposed.
