Distortion estimates for two dimensional diffeomorphisms

In the study of SRB measures one needs to control the ratio of expansion at nearby points. This leads to the notion of distortion for hyperbolic maps. We describe new techniques for estimating these quantities for two dimensional diffeomorphisms. In particular composition formulas are developed for maps with arbitrarily large derivatives.
