On a Characterization of Haus
by
Günther Richter
Universität Bielefeld, Fakultät für Mathematik

Among other nice results, the following descripition of the subcategory Haus of all Hausdorff spaces in the category Top of all topological spaces can be found in [1].

Haus is the largest subcategory C of Top such that

( * ) regular monomorphisms in C are precisely the closed embeddings.

Regular monomorphisms in C are just the equalizers of pairs of C-morphisms. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the proof. Meanwhile, there is an example of a full subcategory C of Top with property ( * ) that fails to be contained in Haus. What remains is maximality of Haus with respect to ( * ).
