Shape and strong shape equivalences
by

Shape and strong shape equivalences are defined in an abstract category endowed with a cylinder functor.Several properties are studied, both new and generalized from particular classes of topological spaces. Special consideration is given to categories which also have pushouts, since in such a case it is possible to define the mapping and the double mapping cylinder of a morphism. These tools reveal to be very useful in characterizing shape and strong shape equivalences. It is also introduced a strong homotopy extension property (SHEP).
