On the *-autonomous category chu(Ab, R/Z)

Michael Barr showed how the category chu(Ab, R/Z) can be interpreted as a category of weakly topologized abelian groups and furthermore as a category of abelian groups endowed with a Mackey topology. We shall give here a characterization of the Mackey topologies which allows to obtain in a straightforward way a generalization of Pontrjagin duality. The latter, which represent a deep result, can be obtained from our generalization by using just one profound theorem, namely Glicksberg's theorem on weakly compact subsets.
