Almost primes, shifted primes and primes in progressions

This is a survey of some results, including recent work of the speaker, on the the distribution of almost primes (numbers with few prime factors), shifted primes (sets of the form {p+a:p prime} for fixed nonzero a), primes in arithmetic progressions, and applications to the distribution of values of arithmetic functions.
