New overconstrained models of polyhedra
by
O. Roeschel
Institute of Geometry, TU Graz, Austria

We start with a set of congruent plane equiform motions in the faces of a polyhedron, each of them having a globally fixed point. Under the restriction of some combinatoric properties we link motions in neighbouring faces of the polyhedron. They give rise to some interesting new mechanisms with systems linked via 2R- and 1R-joints, respectively. Closure conditions are being formulated and used in order to generate one-sided or two-sided closed rectangular arrangements. We investigate the general degree of freedom of these mechanisms depending on their topological structure. Some examples (e. g. Möbius mechanisms and toroidal structures) are studied in detail.
