Specialized Colourings of Steiner Systems
by

We consider colourings of Steiner triple systems and Steiner systems S(2, 4, v) in which blocks have prescribed colour patterns. This can be viewed as a refinement of the classical weak colourings of designs or hypergraphs. Among the main questions of interest that we discuss is the question of the existence of a colouring of given type in which exactly k colours are used, as well as the question of the existence of uncolourable systems. The study of these types of colourings is motivated partly by the relatively recent notion of strict colourings of mixed hypergraphs and the related concept of the upper chromatic number.
