A model for Rainfall data - An application
by
K. Muralidharan
Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar, Gujarat India

When we record rainfall data, during a season, it may happen that there may be days reported with zero rainfall corresponding to dry days. We propose a modified gamma distribution as a suitable model to represent such situations by mixture of a singular distribution at zero and a two parameter gamma distribution. We study the inferences if this model alongwith the asymptotic distribution of the parameters. Based on this 95Confidence Interval for the mean rainfall is obtained. The method is illustrated with a real life data on rainfall at two stations namely, Jalgaon and Coimbatore.
