MANOVA with Random Subject Effects

Effect of random subject effects on the usual MANOVA tests is considered. It is empirically observed that there is a substantial shift in the type I error from its advertised value. In particular, the type I error decreases when the treatments are applied within subjects and increases when the treatments are applied between subjects. Random subject effects contaminate the estimation of hypothesis matrix and error matrix, hence affect the MANOVA tests. Some adjusments that control the type I error close to its advertised value are proposed and evaluated.
