Control Charts for Angular Observations
by
Arnab Kumar Laha
National Institute of Management, Calcutta, India

Angular observations occurs occasionally in the context of quality control. The statistical analysis of angular data is substantially different from linear data. Hence, it is not appropriate to use control charts developed for linear observations when the data are angular in nature. In this paper control chart for mean direction is developed which is appropriate for use when the observations are angular in nature. The circular normal distribution, which is the most popular probability model for angular data, is used as the underlying distribution of the angular observations. Some real life examples are discussed.
