Some Aspects of the Koethe Problem
by
Arthur Sands
Dundee University

In 1930 Koethe obseved that a ring contains a largest nil ideal and asked whether all one-sided nil ideals were contained in it.This question remains open, but many equivalent questions have been found. In this talk certain classes of rings are defined and relationships between them are considered. Each of these classes would coincide with the class of all nil rings if the Koethe question has a positive answer.
