Additivity of bridge number

We present a new proof of a theorem of H. Schubert. This theorem states that the bridge number of a satellite knot is bounded below by the product of the index (of the pattern) and the bridge number of the companion.

It also states that the bridge number of the connected sum of two knots is the sum of the bridge numbers of the summands minus 1.
