The response of a rigid rectangular machine foundation subjected to a vertical harmonic excitation and resting on an elastic layer is studied. First, by using variational methods some analytical results are obtained. Then, by modeling the problem under laboratory conditions, a number of results are obtained from the experiments conducted, and these results are compared with the analytical results. Besides these, the results obtained by using ANSYS, which is a finite element method program, are compared with the results obtained from the mathematical model and the experiments.
