Abstract:The casting nozzle location has a great influence upon the product quality and performance. Improper location results in cold shut, air cavity or shrinkage. In this paper we show two numerical test criteria for 2-D casting, filling time and vortex. First, be sure that the molten metal full fills the mould cavity before it solidifies. Shorter filling time brings smaller difference of temperature between different points of the cast. Second, wish no vortex occurs during the filling process, because the vortex is the main reason that induces gas bubble remaining in the product. This paper uses so-called SOLA-VOF to simulate the flow, and compares the filling time and flow pattern at different nozzle location. The numerical experiment results may be presented to reference of die design.
