Asymptotic Measures for smooth systems

It is well known that iterating simple mappings such as the quadratic map x -> r x(1 - x) or its two dimensional cousin (x,y) -> ( r x (1 - x) - by, x) often produces interesting and complicated structures. It seems that the best way to rigorously describe the structures which appear is through the use of so-called asymptotic probability measures. We will give a non-technical survey of recent developments on such objects emphasizing geometric as well as analytic concepts.
