Evolutionary trees in the plane
by
Mike Hendy
Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University

Evolutionary trees are not naturally embedded in the plane, although a pictorial representation of any such tree is usually planar. Counting such embeddings links the numbers of binary evolutionary trees to the Catalan numbers. However there are some aspects of evolutionary trees which relate to naturally to planarity. In particular we will consider a conjecture about minimum distance trees and an open problem about counting the histories of tandemly repeated genes.
