A new structure theorem for compact groups
by

Coauthors: Karl H. Hofmann, Darmstadt University of Technology

This talk reports on recent joint work with Karl Hofmann. It is well-known that every compact group is a projective limit of compact Lie groups. However, there is no way to represent a non-metrizable compact group, G, as a projective limit of a countable projective system of Lie groups. However, as a corollary of our main result we are able to identify a characteristic subgroup, N, of G, such that the quotient group G/N is indeed a countable projective limit of specified groups.
