Piecewise Linear Approximations of Cantor Sets with Nonlinear Self-Similarities

We find limiting expressions for the Hausdorff dimension of nonlinearly self-similar Cantor sets. The results are applied to the limit sets of a family of discrete subgroups, of the fractional linear transformations of the hyperbolic plane, known as Hecke groups. Relations to shift dynamics, continued fraction transformations and spectral theory will be described.
