The Saga of the High School Identities

The High School Identities that have been so well known since Dedekind's famous 1888 monograph "Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen" have proved to be difficult to analyze from the universal algebra perspective. This talk will review highlights of research into this subject and discuss a number of challenging questions the subject poses.
